Tariffs and other trade barriers can make selling goods abroad more difficult or expensive. Negotiations to reduce these obstacles can therefore improve opportunities for UK businesses. Shared rules also give the UK a framework for challenging trade measures it believes break agreed rules, rather than relying only on its bargaining power.
