Paper 1, Paper 2
A system of legally enforceable rules that sets out rights, responsibilities and standards of behaviour in society.
Distinguish rules from laws using both their scope and how they are enforced. A football referee’s authority is not the same as a court’s authority.
For an evaluation, explain how laws help, consider their limitations and reach a justified conclusion rather than simply listing advantages and disadvantages.
Explain how a law achieves its purpose, rather than simply listing purposes.

Law is a system of legally enforceable rules that sets out rights, responsibilities and standards of behaviour in society. Unlike a personal preference or an informal agreement between friends, a legal rule can be enforced through public institutions, including the courts. Breaking the law can have consequences such as a fine, a criminal sentence or an order to compensate someone.
