Revise: Differences Between Civil and Criminal LawWhere someone has suffered loss, a court may award damages: money intended to compensate them. These remedies address the problem rather than normally punishing the defendant.

A remedy may be damages: money awarded to compensate someone for harm or loss. However, money is not the answer to every dispute. A court may instead make an order requiring particular behaviour to take place or stop.
Do not classify a case just by whether money is paid: civil damages compensate for harm, whereas a criminal fine is a punishment.
Distinguish civil damages, which compensate a successful claimant, from a criminal fine, which is a punishment.
