Paper 1, Paper 2
Revise: Courts and TribunalsIf it is too serious, they send it to the Crown Court; a defendant can also choose a Crown Court jury trial.
When choosing a court, explain both the type of case and why that court is suitable: for example, murder is a serious criminal offence tried in the Crown Court.
Distinguish the first hearing from the trial: virtually all criminal cases start in a magistrates’ court, but the most serious offences are tried in the Crown Court.
In a Crown Court jury trial, the jury decides guilt; the judge decides the sentence if the defendant is convicted.
