Revise: Small Molecule PropertiesBecause the intermolecular forces in substances made from small molecules are weak, relatively little energy is needed to overcome them. Their melting points and boiling points are therefore relatively low. Such substances are usually gases or liquids at room temperature, although this is a general pattern rather than a definition of a small molecule.
