Reference standard

Measurements can be compared with known reference standards. Instruments are also calibrated using known standards so that the signal corresponds correctly to the quantity being measured. Provided that the instrument is calibrated and the sample is handled correctly, this can reduce subjective judgement and improve accuracy.
