A starting substance supplied to an industrial process to make a product.
An industrial process must make enough product quickly enough to be worthwhile, using raw materials and energy that can be obtained at a manageable cost. The conditions giving the greatest possible equilibrium yield may not give the fastest production or the lowest operating cost. The Haber process, which makes ammonia, shows why a factory balances these aims.
