Revise: Reactions with MetalsEach can react with a metal to form a metal halide. The product’s name tells you which halogen reacted: chlorine forms a chloride, bromine a bromide and iodine an iodide.

An ionic compound containing a metal ion and halide ions, such as potassium bromide.
Name the metal halide from both reactants: chlorine forms a chloride, bromine a bromide and iodine an iodide.
When deciding whether displacement occurs, compare the two halogens: the free halogen must be more reactive than the halogen in the metal halide.
