An allowed energy state occupied by electrons in an atom; at GCSE this may be described as an electron shell.
Revise: Electronic StructureAn atom has a tiny central nucleus, with electrons occupying energy levels around it. At GCSE, these energy levels may also be called shells. The shell nearest the nucleus is the lowest energy level; shells further from the nucleus have progressively higher energies.
- Revise: Atomic Structure and the Periodic Table
A region around the nucleus that electrons with similar energies occupy; also called an electron shell.
