Begin with a control experiment carried out without the possible catalyst. Repeat the reaction with the candidate substance while keeping the reactants, their amounts, the temperature and other rate-affecting conditions the same. Measure the rate in a suitable way—for example, by measuring how quickly a product forms or a reactant disappears.
