Revise: Compounds and Chemical EquationsDuring a chemical reaction, atoms from different elements can be rearranged and chemically joined to produce a compound. The product is a new substance, so its properties can be very different from those of the elements from which it formed.

A process in which atoms are rearranged as bonds are broken or formed, usually involving changes in the arrangement of outer-shell electrons.
Revise: Reactions and electron arrangementThe essential connection is that atomic number fixes the electron count of a neutral atom, while the arrangement of those electrons—especially the outer ones—influences how that atom participates in chemical reactions.
Do not claim that atoms react by changing the number of protons in their nuclei. In ordinary chemical reactions, atoms and electrons are rearranged, but each element keeps its atomic number.
