Revise: Instrumental MethodsChemical analysis is used to identify substances or find out how much of a substance is present. The ion tests studied earlier often depend on visible observations, such as a flame colour, a precipitate or a gas-test result. These tests are useful, but an observation made by eye can be difficult when the colour is faint, the sample contains only a tiny amount of an ion or several samples must be tested.
