Revise: Generality of functional group reactionsDifferent alcohols share characteristic reactions, including combustion and oxidation; oxidation can produce carboxylic acids. Carboxylic acids contain the –COOH functional group, which gives them their weakly acidic behaviour.
Remember that alkanes have no functional group. Their relative lack of reactivity contrasts with the characteristic reactions of alkenes, alcohols and carboxylic acids.
