Revise: Carbon Monoxide ToxicityCarbon monoxide binds to haemoglobin much more strongly than oxygen does—about 200 times more strongly. This forms carboxyhaemoglobin. Because the carbon monoxide remains tightly bound, fewer binding sites are available to carry oxygen.
