GCSE Chemistry · key term
A reaction in which many unsaturated monomers join to form a polymer without producing another molecule.
Used by AQA, Edexcel and OCR
Specification 4.7.3.1 · Paper 2
Revise: Addition PolymerisationIn addition polymerisation, the carbon–carbon double bond in each monomer becomes a single bond, and new covalent bonds connect the monomers into a chain.
Specification 9.18C, 9.19C · Paper 2
Polymerisation in which unsaturated monomers join without forming another product.
Revise: Polymerisation of EtheneThis reaction is addition polymerisation, and the product is called poly(ethene). The name is formed by placing the monomer name in brackets after “poly”.
A reaction in which many monomers containing C=C join to form a polymer, without producing another molecule.
Specification C6.2d, C6.2g · Paper 2 (Foundation), Paper 4 (Higher)
A reaction in which many monomers containing C=C bonds join to form a polymer, with no other product.
Revise: Addition PolymerisationAn alkene such as ethene is a small molecule called a monomer. Its carbon–carbon double bond, C=C, is its functional group: the part that allows it to react in addition polymerisation. When many alkene monomers join, they make one very large molecule called a polymer.
A reaction in which alkene monomers join as their carbon–carbon double bonds open, producing only a polymer.
Paper 1 (Foundation), Paper 2 (Foundation), Paper 3 (Higher), Paper 4 (Higher)
A reaction in which many unsaturated monomers join to form a polymer as the only product.
Revise: Addition polymerisation principlesThe monomers used in addition polymerisation are unsaturated molecules containing the alkene functional group, C=C. This double bond is the reactive part of the molecule.
