Unemployment

During an economic downturn, spending may fall and unemployment may rise. These are tendencies, not guarantees that every business will experience the same result. A small café, for example, depends both on customers being able to afford visits and on the costs of ingredients, wages and borrowing.

A business cannot control whether consumers across the country earn more or whether unemployment rises, but it can change how it responds.
