Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)

Functional magnetic resonance imaging, or fMRI, was an important technological development because it allowed scientists to observe changes inside the working brain without deliberately damaging it. During a scan, a person lies with their head inside the scanner and performs a task. The scanner maps changes in blood flow.
