A structure in an ovary in which an egg develops.
When describing control, link each hormone to its source and its effect. For example: “FSH is released by the pituitary gland and stimulates a follicle to develop in an ovary.”
Keep the sequence clear: follicle development → ovulation → maintenance of the uterus lining → menstruation if pregnancy does not occur.

A follicle containing an egg then develops in an ovary. At the same time, the uterus lining repairs itself and becomes thicker. Ovulation occurs when the mature follicle releases its egg from the ovary.
