Specification B3.2a · Paper 1 (Foundation), Paper 3 (Higher)
An organ that produces and releases hormones into the bloodstream.
State that endocrine glands secrete hormones directly into the blood; do not describe hormones as travelling along nerves or through ducts.
When describing the pathway, give the complete sequence: endocrine gland releases a hormone → blood transports it → the hormone binds to compatible receptors on target cells → the target tissue or organ responds.

An endocrine gland releases a hormone into the bloodstream, where it is carried in the blood plasma. The circulating blood can therefore transport the hormone from its gland to tissues and organs elsewhere in the body.
