Revise: Treatments for cardiovascular diseaseIf an artery is narrowed or blocked, coronary bypass surgery can provide another route for blood to reach the heart muscle beyond the blockage. It may help when opening the artery with a stent is unsuitable, but it is a major operation, with greater immediate demands and surgical risks than taking medicine. A stent and a bypass therefore tackle a similar blood-flow problem in different ways.
