Revise: Types of diseasesCommunicable diseases are caused by pathogens. These include some bacteria, viruses, fungi and protists. A pathogen can move to another host and cause disease there, so communicable diseases are also called infectious diseases.

Revise: Types of DiseaseCan it pass from one organism to another?** This separates communicable diseases from non-communicable diseases. The distinction concerns cause and transmission, not how serious the disease is or what symptoms it produces.

When comparing disease types, state the transmission distinction: communicable diseases can spread between organisms; non-communicable diseases cannot.
Do not say that a communicable disease is simply passed on by a person. It is caused by a pathogen and may spread directly or indirectly; malaria, for example, is transmitted by an animal vector.
For a non-communicable disease, describe a lifestyle, genetic or environmental factor as increasing risk unless the evidence establishes direct causation.
