Cirrhosis

In the most serious stage, cirrhosis, extensive scarring prevents the liver from working properly. These are stages of worsening disease, not a claim that everyone who drinks will pass through every stage.

Some liver diseases, including cirrhosis, likewise have more than one possible cause. Cirrhosis is long-term liver scarring. Heavy alcohol use can contribute to it, but hepatitis infection, obesity and other conditions can also lead to liver damage.
