Binary fission

Definition

A type of simple cell division in which one bacterial cell divides to form two daughter cells.

Binary fission is not mitosis: mitosis is the division of a eukaryotic nucleus, whereas bacteria have no nucleus. Both processes pass copied genetic material to new cells, but their mechanisms are not the same.
