Artefact

Stone tools are artefacts: objects shaped by earlier humans rather than formed by natural processes alone. A maker could strike a stone to produce a sharp edge or shape it further for a particular task. Stone can survive long after softer materials have decayed, so tools provide evidence of what earlier humans could do.
