Revise: Decomposition FactorsIn oxygen-deficient places such as many landfill sites, anaerobic decomposition becomes more important and can produce methane. Methane has a much greater greenhouse effect than the carbon dioxide produced by aerobic decomposition. To explain decay in a particular setting, consider temperature, whether there is enough water for microorganisms, and whether that water has displaced the air they need for aerobic respiration.
