Comparing a cluster poem with an unseen poem
What you need to know
Practice pairs for each cluster, each a named cluster poem with a poem you haven't studied: Bright Star with Elizabeth Barrett Browning's How do I love thee? (Love and Relationships), The Destruction of Sennacherib with Thomas Hardy's In Time of 'The Breaking of Nations' (Conflict), and The Bluebell with Thomas Hood's I remember, I remember (Youth and Age).
For each pair: the ideas and attitudes, tone and atmosphere, and language and structure the poems share or don't, a comparative plan, and a model comparative paragraph.
Timing part (a): about 45 minutes, with the first ten spent reading both poems and planning.
Comparison connectives and sentence starters for a Grade 4 answer, and how a Grade 8 answer interweaves the poems.
