Part (b): exploring another moment in your text
What you need to know
How part (b) works: a question on the same text that takes up part (a)'s theme, often more broadly, answered from memory about another moment in the text, for 20 marks in about 30 minutes.
What earns the marks: your response (AO1) and analysis of language, form and structure (AO2), equally weighted; context earns no marks of its own here, and anything written about the part (a) extract is ignored.
Choosing the moment: one well-chosen moment analysed closely beats a tour of the whole text; you may use more than one, but each needs close analysis of the writer's words.
Quoting in a closed-book answer: short, precise quotations learned for the text's key moments, woven into your sentences.
The worked example: the June 2024 Animal Farm question on another moment where the animals' suffering is described, answered on the confessions and executions in Chapter 7, with a plan and a model answer of about 450 words, and the level and mark an examiner would give and why.
The part (b) questions OCR set for each modern text in June 2025 and June 2024, and the moments examiners saw used best.
Common mistakes: reusing the part (a) extract, retelling the plot, bolting on context, and answers cut short by spending too long on part (a).
