Question 1: narrative
Answering Section A
What you need to know
How Question 1 works: a stepped question in three or four parts, in about 30 minutes: short parts for knowledge (1 to 4 marks each), in some years a 5-mark part for analysis, and a final extended part worth 15 marks (5 for knowledge and 10 for analysis).
Why the paper's three questions don't always have the same number of parts: in any year only two of them include the 5-mark analysis part.
Questions set out as Eduqas sets them: a narrative climax and how editing and one other element create meaning in it, a key setting and how mise-en-scène creates meaning, and narrative with film form.
Using narrative terms precisely (inciting incident, climax, withholding information) and analysing one key sequence in depth.
Model answers to each part, with the mark an examiner would give and why.
How to answer each part: the marks, and what the short identify and explain parts need as well as the extended answer, since naming a technique instead of a specific example from the film loses marks there. Practice questions to try, each headed 'Practice question' with its marks.
Quote only short lines of dialogue you're sure of, a few words at a time, and base every point on what happens in the finished film.
