Submarine
What you need to know
Submarine (Richard Ayoade, 2010): fifteen-year-old Oliver Tate, in 1980s Swansea, sets out to win his first girlfriend, Jordana, and to save his parents' marriage.
Richard Ayoade's first feature film, adapted from Joe Dunthorne's novel, with songs by Alex Turner.
Set and filmed in South Wales in the 1980s, as a coming-of-age story.
Key sequences to know in detail: the opening, the super 8 montage of the two weeks with Jordana, and the ending on the beach.
Cinematography and mise-en-scène: colour motifs such as blue for loneliness and Jordana's red coat, symmetrical framing, and 1980s costume.
Editing and sound: chapter titles, jump cuts, Oliver's narration and fantasies, and Alex Turner's songs.
The few short lines of dialogue that matter most in these sequences, a few words each.
Short answers of the kind the first parts of the Section C question ask for: naming and describing a costume, setting or visually distinctive scene, and explaining how it creates meaning.
How to answer each part: the marks, and what the short identify and explain parts need as well as the extended answer, since naming a technique instead of a specific example from the film loses marks there. Practice questions to try, each headed 'Practice question' with its marks.
Quote only short lines of dialogue you're sure of, a few words at a time, and base every point on what happens in the finished film.
