Skyfall: contexts and key sequences
Skyfall
What you need to know
Skyfall (Sam Mendes, 2012): after a mission in Istanbul goes wrong, James Bond returns to MI6 as a former agent, Raoul Silva, attacks it to take revenge on M, which leads to a final battle at Skyfall, Bond's childhood home in Scotland.
The twenty-third Bond film, released for the series' fiftieth anniversary, with Roger Deakins as cinematographer.
Cyber-terrorism, and the question of whether old-fashioned spies still matter.
Key sequences to know in detail: the Istanbul chase, the fight in Shanghai, Silva's island, and the siege of Skyfall.
Cinematography and mise-en-scène: silhouettes, reflections and symmetrical framing, blue and orange colour schemes, and fire and mist at Skyfall.
Editing and sound: action editing, Thomas Newman's score and the Bond theme, and Adele's title song.
The few short lines of dialogue that matter most in these sequences, a few words each.
Short answers of the kind the first parts of the Section C question ask for: naming and describing a costume, setting or visually distinctive scene, and explaining how it creates meaning.
How to answer each part: the marks, and what the short identify and explain parts need as well as the extended answer, since naming a technique instead of a specific example from the film loses marks there. Practice questions to try, each headed 'Practice question' with its marks.
Quote only short lines of dialogue you're sure of, a few words at a time, and base every point on what happens in the finished film.
