Plot overview
Introduction
What you need to know
The whole novel in brief, part by part, and how Silas's story and Godfrey's run side by side across two parts set sixteen years apart.
Where each part's key moments fall, from Silas's fifteenth year in Raveloe to Eppie's wedding, and the sixteen years between Part One and Part Two.
How Silas's story and Godfrey's meet when Eppie walks into Silas's cottage, from 'In the days when the spinning-wheels hummed busily' to 'I think nobody could be happier than we are'.
Edexcel's novel question has two parts, and neither marks context: part (a) on the printed extract marks language, form and structure (AO2); part (b) on the novel elsewhere, from memory, marks the argument and its references (AO1), not language analysis. Use context only where it explains a reading, and say which part each worked paragraph and exam tip is for.
