Chapter 9: Dr Lanyon's Narrative
The plot, part by part
What you need to know
Lanyon's letter: the drawer from Jekyll's cabinet, Hyde's visit, and the transformation that destroys Lanyon.
Key quotations: 'he put the glass to his lips and drank at one gulp', 'like a man restored from death', 'there stood Henry Jekyll!', 'My life is shaken to its roots', 'the moral turpitude that man unveiled to me'.
Lanyon's narrative as a first-hand, scientific witness, and the transformation seen from outside.
Edexcel's novel question has two parts, and neither marks context: part (a) on the printed extract marks language, form and structure (AO2); part (b) on the novel elsewhere, from memory, marks the argument and its references (AO1), not language analysis. Use context only where it explains a reading, and say which part each worked paragraph and exam tip is for.
