Plot overview
Introduction
What you need to know
The whole novel in brief, setting by setting, and how Jane's journey from Gateshead to Ferndean is told as her own autobiography.
Where each setting's key moments fall, and how each place marks a stage in Jane's growth, from ten-year-old orphan to married woman.
The novel as a fictional autobiography, first published in three volumes in 1847, running from 'There was no possibility of taking a walk that day' to 'Reader, I married him'.
Edexcel's novel question has two parts, and neither marks context: part (a) on the printed extract marks language, form and structure (AO2); part (b) on the novel elsewhere, from memory, marks the argument and its references (AO1), not language analysis. Use context only where it explains a reading, and say which part each worked paragraph and exam tip is for.
