The plot, part by part
What you need to know
The demand for a female companion, Victor's promise, his journey with Clerval through England to Scotland,
the destruction of the half-made female on Orkney, and the creature's threat.
Key quotations: 'You must create a female for me', 'I am malicious because I am miserable', 'if I cannot inspire love, I will cause fear', 'I will go to the vast wilds of South America', 'the filthy mass that moved and talked', 'I am a blasted tree; the bolt has entered my soul', 'It was, indeed, a filthy process', 'a race of devils would be propagated upon the earth', 'A ghastly grin wrinkled his lips', 'trembling with passion, tore to pieces the thing on which I was engaged', 'You are my creator, but I am your master;—obey!', 'I shall be with you on your wedding-night'.
Setting: the journey down the Rhine and through Britain, and the bleak Orkney island where Victor works alone.
Structure: the creature's threat, and how Victor misreads it by assuming that he himself is the target.
Edexcel's novel question has two parts, and neither marks context: part (a) on the printed extract marks language, form and structure (AO2); part (b) on the novel elsewhere, from memory, marks the argument and its references (AO1), not language analysis. Use context only where it explains a reading, and say which part each worked paragraph and exam tip is for.
