Stave Three
The plot, part by part
What you need to know
The Ghost of Christmas Present: the Cratchits, Fred's party, and Ignorance and Want.
Key quotations: 'a jolly Giant', 'Come in! and know me better, man!', 'They were not a handsome family; they were not well dressed', 'God bless us every one!', 'If these shadows remain unaltered by the Future, the child will die', 'Will you decide what men shall live, what men shall die?', 'the Founder of the Feast', 'This boy is Ignorance. This girl is Want.', 'most of all beware this boy', 'Are there no prisons?', 'Are there no workhouses?'.
Context: Ignorance and Want, the Ragged Schools, and Dickens's argument for education.
Edexcel's novel question has two parts, and neither marks context: part (a) on the printed extract marks language, form and structure (AO2); part (b) on the novel elsewhere, from memory, marks the argument and its references (AO1), not language analysis. Use context only where it explains a reading, and say which part each worked paragraph and exam tip is for.
