Reactions of Acids
What you need to know
Recall that acids react with some metals to produce salts and hydrogen gas.
Write balanced equations predicting the products of reactions between hydrochloric or sulfuric acids and metals such as magnesium, zinc, and iron.
Recall that acids react with metal carbonates to produce salts, water, and carbon dioxide.
Describe the test for hydrogen gas using a burning splint.
Describe the test for carbon dioxide gas using an aqueous solution of calcium hydroxide (limewater).
Explain, in terms of gain or loss of electrons, that the reactions of metals with acids are redox reactions (Higher Tier only).
Identify which chemical species are oxidised and which are reduced in given reactions between metals and acids (Higher Tier only).
